Knowing how to use radar can be a life saver. Even if you don't have a radar set of your own you might need it when you are on someone else's boat, as I found out whilst crossing the Dover Straits in thick fog! In fact the 'ColRegs' say that in restricted visibility if you have radar you must use it.
The cost of radar sets have come down dramatically and more leisure sailers are now fitting them.
Apart from being able to see what's around you in fog, Radar can also be used to fix your position. However, it is easy to misinterpret the image unless you have been trained.
Learn about gain and clutter, targets and plotting, VRMs & EBLs, CPA & guard zones and become comfortable with this wonderful technology.
