Basic SkillsRYA Keelboat Level 2
This 2-day course is the second part of the beginner's basic introduction to sailing. It follows on from the skills and experience acquired during 'Start Sailing' Level 1, providing more practice at tacking and gybing and refining all the techniques you were introduced to on level 1.
You will also learn more about reefing the sails for different conditions, wind against tide, holding a transit, engine checks and general good seamanship.
The keelboat courses of the National Sailing Scheme are also ideal for 'filling in the gaps' between courses on the Cruising Scheme.
Their focus is on good boat handling under sail, teaching you about the different sail settings and providing the opportunity to practise your skills. All of this comes together in the important skill of being able to sail back to a MOB (man-overboard).
This can be of great benefit to potential Day Skippers in particular, who might have come to sailing via the cruising scheme and not had that much experience of these practical skills, compared to a dinghy sailor.
Here in Morecambe Bay, there is also the added benefit of excellent tidal experience. It is a great way to make the progression from inland waters to safe sea sailing and also for dinghy sailors wanting to move towards the cruising world.
